A call has been issued to double check any $50 notes handed to stores, with a surge in counterfeit notes through the northern end of the Gold Coast.
Phony $50 bills have been discovered at bars, gaming areas and service stations around the northern suburbs, sparking pleas from police to stay vigilant.
It's believed the fake-fifties look real enough but don't feel authentic, with the colour coming off if it's rubbed hard enough.
There is also no coat of arms watermark when you hold the note up to the light.
Anyone with information about counterfeit notes is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
